This mantra, known as the Mantra of Transformation, comes from the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upanishad.
It is a prayer for inner evolution: from untruth to truth, from darkness to light, from mortality to immortality.
In the Satyananda tradition, it is chanted at the beginning of practice as part of the Mangalacharan invocation.
How I read it#
The movement of the mantra is simple and direct. It does not ask for escape from life, but for a clearer way of seeing and living inside it.
For me, each line points toward transformation: not as a dramatic break, but as a steady movement of awareness.
Line by line#

Om asato mā sad gamaya begins with the movement from untruth to truth. I read this as a return from confusion, projection, or avoidance toward what is real.
Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya asks for movement from darkness to light. Not only intellectual clarity, but a change in the quality of perception.
Mṛtyor mā amṛtaṃ gamaya turns toward the deepest transformation: from identification with what passes away toward what is not reduced to passing forms.
Om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ closes the mantra with peace on all levels: body, mind, and spirit.Personal use#
For me, this mantra is a reminder that yoga is not just physical exercise, but a path of transformation: of awareness, perception, and ultimately, life itself.
